Exhibition of Chan Pui Hei Karen, Shum Hok Kiu and Yuen Lai Yi,

"Foreigners" is an exhibition by Karen Chan, Cindy Shum, and Queenie Yuen, recording the artists’ thoughts on place, distance, and the linkage between people. While all were raised in Hong Kong, the three artists are now based in different countries. The three shared a new circumstance to adapt to the surrounding environment, whether in a foreign land or remaining in their original place. While Chan translates the foreign culture from a bird's-eye view on the horizon, Shum bridges the gap between the place where she relocated to and the other places with symbols of water in her works, and Yuen rearranges the scattered fragments between her memories and the unfamiliarity of the present, to re-contemplate the land where she’s living. The show comprises paintings of various scales, inviting viewers to follow the artists’ diasporic journey, observe how place shapes our ways of seeing and revisit scattered connections.
Those displayed works are the pages of her diary recording the rise and fall of this old neighbourhood and her reflections on relationship within it. The subjects depicted among Queenie Yuen’s paintings at this exhibition are all drawn from her childhood experiences and the area where she grew up — Tsui Ping Estate and a nearby park close to her home. Yuen moved to Hong Kong at around 6-year-old, living with her grandparents, parents, and two younger sisters in a unit around 200-square-feet. The park nearby was the only place where she could find some peace of mind. On one occasion, after being scolded by her grandmother, Yuen ran away from home to this very park. Every Mid-Autumn Festival, there was a carnival there, with families gathering to appreciate the moon, solve lantern riddles, wave glow sticks, and enjoy popcorn — a lively and bustling scene. For Yuen, this park is truly filled with cherished memories. The series of “People who Grow Plant” began creation in 2022. Since moving away from Tsui Ping Estate, Yuen has returned to this place on several occasions by chance, only to find everything changed. The community that once was no longer exists. The nearby park has gradually fallen into disrepair. The slide, seen every time, takes on different status: one night after passing behind it, there appeared a strange bundle; the slide seems being dismantles and then underwent a brief period of repair. To Yuen, she feels that such experiences are commonplace in old communities, embodying the unique quietness, mystery, and even decline of the district.
